Visit Veracruz Fonda & Bar for an elevated version of the beloved Veracruz All Natural. They’ve turned these terrific taco trucks into a memorable Mexican dining experience. Here you’ll find an expanded menu that incorporates traditional and iconic recipes from this family’s origins in Veracruz, Mexico. Head up to Mueller for one of Austin’s Best Restaurants and the full Veracruz treatment.
Whether you are making your way around Mueller or planning a perfect dinner night, Veracruz Fonda is the place to find yourself. When it’s warm, they open the massive front windows and let the sun shine in from the peaceful patio into the main room. You’ll walk into a warm dining hall with the Mexican Movie Star Maria Felix watching over patrons. Her classic portraits paired with contemporary mural art pay homage to the Vazquez sisters that started it all, the recipes from the past influencing the kitchen, and the modern twists that tie everything together. They combine the best of both old and new worlds to put palate pleasing plates on the table in a fresh yet familiar atmosphere. Fun and filling for the whole family, for your date night, celebration, shopping day, or any other occasion.
Dig into a mastered Mexican menu. You’ll find the menu is simple yet saturated with supreme selections. Veracruz is known for their tacos and you’ll find some of the best of their catalog here like the migas, the barbacoa, chile relleno, y mas! You get to choose flour or their beautiful blue corn tortillas. They make these to the perfect thickness, texture, and rich purpley blue color. If you want a thicker and more rich version, try the picadas with egg or steak and delicious salsas. Mexican food calls for ceviche! They serve a bowl of shrimp ceviche with pico and perfectly crisped totopos - this won’t last long on the table. Don’t skip their specialty small plate section with unique options like the blue vegetarian Empanada de Queso & Epazote. They say this empanada is served with “your favorite salsa” and they aren’t kidding. This rich orangey red salsa was served warm on the side and quickly became one of my favorite parts of the meal and an all time favorite dip.
Their menu is filled with interesting traditional ingredients. You’ll find savory entrees served with fried sweet plantains and banana leaves. Try the Cochinita Pibil for a bountiful balance of sweet, savory, and salt between the orange marinated pork, beans, rice, and blue corn all settled in a cast iron skillet. Every entree is delicious and worth trying but the true star of the show is their Mojarra Frita. We upgraded to the Red Snapper and I can’t recommend this enough. Not only is the presentation perfect, but it was the ultimate duo of crispy fried skin outside a buttery and flakey middle. Even the rice on the side was so filled with flavor it had us silent and scraping the plate till the last grain.
What makes this location even more unique within the Veracruz family is their full bar. They’ve put together a stellar selection of beer and wine and a cleverly crafted cocktail menu. Bartenders here are shaking, stirring, squeezing, and decorating some of the best drinks in town. Many of their sips are served with their house made spicy and tangy rim mixes that give that perfect added punch to already delicious drinks. Enjoy their take on a margarita and order the Muellerita, sippable and served in a charming Veracruz cup. Their most picture perfect pour was La Julieta, a fabulously foamy coconut and passion fruit tequila drink with mint and a pop of purple powder.
Veracruz is the type of restaurant that is well rounded, filled with talent, inspired, involved, and impressive. Each aspect of every item on the menu is expertly crafted. This means you’ll be blown away by everything from the big dishes down to the beans. Top off the meal with a tasty sweet treat. They have heavy hitting classics like conchas, tres leches cake, and caramel coated flan.
Anyone can find a flavor to fall in love with at Veracruz Fonda.
See y’all there.
