Canje came to us in 2021 from the folks that brought the ever loved Emmer and Rye to Rainey St. They have a handful of heavenly destinations and Canje has quickly become a cherished Austin spot. This restaurant lights up East Sixth Street with captivating Caribbean cuisine and a comfortable atmosphere. Dine here to experience traditions and flavors from the Caribbean region in a cool, contemporary setting. Chef Tavel Bristol-Joseph brings in inspiration from his native country Guyana and beyond for this remarkable menu.
Canje - named after National Bird of Guyana
No need to book a ticket to get away from it all for a while. Leave your passports at home and treat yourself to a tropical trip right in the heart of East Austin. You’ll discover here a modern and lush dining room filled with warm lighting, patterns, and plants. Pulling symbols and qualities from the Caribbean Islands and South America, they've turned this space into a special escape from the city. Canje welcomes you to relax, rejoice, and savor each bite.
Pineapples and Patties!
Each plate and drink coming from this kitchen is a satisfying sample of unique and traditional tastes. Chef Tavel Bristol-Joseph has made an impressive impact, not just in Austin but across the country. Just last year, 2022, they were listed on the New York Times Top 50 Restaurants in America list.
Feast on fabulous flavors, many that might be new to your palette. An immediate favorite is the pink pineapple appetizer served with melon and a mouthwatering aji amarillo sauce. This is a rare delicacy as they come from a farm in Costa Rica, the only one growing these pink pineapples in the world. Another menu stand out are the oxtail beef patties. These meaty pockets are supremely savory and served with a perfect pineapple pique sauce. Try Canje’s take on classics like sea bass and jerk chicken and you’ll be blown away. Test dishes you might not have tried before like the rich wild boar pepper pot. Don’t discount the basics, their sweet potato plate is phenomenal. Make sure to order a few sides of the fresh flakey roti and the succulent fried sweet plantains.
Sweet Potato & Wild Boar Pepper Pot
Complimenting this cuisine are their scrumptious cocktails and desserts. One can’t go wrong with tres leches, especially with white chocolate and coconut milk. If you love that creamy combo you might also fancy the frozen lemongrass Pina Colada. Brighten up your night with a beautiful aperol beverage like the First Dance with vodka and passionfruit. Need a boost? Sip on their velvety version of the classic carajillo. Canje has mastered the art of combining sweet and spicy ingredients throughout the menu, highlighting the best of each. We couldn’t get enough of their cinnamon hibiscus sorbet, a perfect example of that bold balance.
